Stranded on the coast of Iceland, the chapel's bionic form mimics that of a whale. Visitors enter through a low fishtail, stepping into a space designed to encourage reflection on environmental degradation. The chapel's supporting structure, made from environmentally friendly materials, is designed to cause minimal damage to the natural environment. The use of black wood mirrors traditional Icelandic architecture, while the dark natural light within the chapel directs visitors' gaze towards the ocean and Iceland's famous black beach.
Despite being a temporary and yet-to-be-completed project, the Coast Whale chapel has already garnered significant attention. Its unique design and environmental message have made it a tourist destination that advocates for environmental protection and whale conservation. The chapel's design also reflects a deep respect for its environment, with adjustable nodes that can be moved according to Iceland's extreme weather conditions.
The chapel was developed in Porto, Portugal, over a period of three months, from December 2019 to January 2020. The project was realized using wood, steel, glass, and marble, and measures 20m x 8m x 11m. The design process involved extensive research into the site's geological conditions and the form and construction of whales, resulting in a building that can adapt to the tide of the season like a swimming whale.
Despite the challenges posed by the project's scale and the need for a strong adaptive solution, the Coast Whale chapel has already received prestigious recognition. In 2020, it was awarded the Golden A' Architecture, Building, and Structure Design Award, a testament to its innovative design and profound environmental message.
In conclusion, Jinyu Zhang's Coast Whale chapel is a remarkable example of architecture that respects and integrates with its environment. It serves as a reminder of our connection with the ocean and our responsibility to protect it, offering a space for reflection and contemplation amidst the natural beauty of Iceland's coast.
